What do you currently do at your company?
I currently run an online nutrition business where I work alongside my clients to develop personalized nutrition plans. My primary goal is to help individuals understand the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle. There are no “good” or “bad” foods, it is about figuring out what works best for yourself and then practicing moderation. I want to help my clients make educated choices, without them being afraid of food.
What was the inspiration behind your business?
I grew up playing sports, so I was always very aware of what I put in my body. I wanted to perform at a high level so I needed to understand how different foods would impact my abilities on and off the field. After graduating from California State University, I wasn’t entirely sure of what professional direction I would take but one of my friends suggested opening my own business which really planted the seed in my head. While I enjoyed working for other nutrition companies, it really wasn’t rewarding.
What defines your way of doing business?
I take a very collaborative approach to business and I work alongside clients to develop a detailed plan of action. I work to understand their needs and then do my best to establish a program they can easily incorporate into their current lifestyle. Most people associate nutritionists with weight loss, but it really is so much more than that. I work with many individuals with dietary restrictions that just need help getting the proper amount of nutrients into their diet.
What keys to being productive can you share?
That’s a tough question because I find that it really depends on the day. Some days taking a long walk outside or starting my day with exercise fuels my productivity, whereas other days planning out my day is more effective. There is no secret really, just listen to your body and what it needs at all times.
Tell us one long-term goal in your career.
I think a long-term goal of mine would be to expand my business and start offering fitness training alongside my nutritional services. I am very passionate about exercise and I am currently working on obtaining my personal trainer certification.
What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work?
I am very much a family oriented person, so I spend most of my spare time with my loved ones. My career is very important to me but so is my personal life, so I will always find a way to balance both aspects of my life.
Who has been a role model to you and why?
My high school football coach. He was such a positive influence in my life and eventually on my career trajectory. He taught me the importance of perspective and to not lose sight of your end goals.
What advice would you give to aspiring to succeed in your field?
Do not be influenced by current ‘diet’ trends and fads. Don’t fall into that trap because 99 percent of the time it is just someone trying to trick the consumer into thinking that specific product is the solution.
